It was a beautiful and flat calm day on the water. We headed north, seeing harbor porpoise along the way. Next we stopped to check out the Harbor Seals hauled out on White Rock. We continued our journey to the north and hit the jackpot at Boiling Reef, just off East Point on Saturna Island. There we found five different species on one rock. Steller Sea Lions numbering 70 plus, a half dozen or so California Sea Lions, 30 plus Harbor Seals, 7 bald eagles (3 mature and 4 immature) and a couple hundred bonaparte gulls. The sounds of roaring Stellers and barking California Sea Lions and the call of the gulls when they were flushed by a bald eagle added to our encounter. After leaving boiling reef we continued north in search of whales. In no time at all, Katie found the humpback whale, known as Big Mama! Big Mama has been spotted in the Salish sea every year since 1997. She has brought at least 6 calves in with her over the years. That day she was slowly zig zagging back and forth in the Strait of Georgia. She gave us just a touch of a fluke shot on her departing dive. Another great day in the Salish Sea!
