Bigg’s Killer whales eat and play!

Bigg’s Killer whales eat and play!

Wow!  What a day.  A series of fortuitous events led us to Orcas almost in our backyard.  We’d been traveling north of Friday Harbor, where much of the recent activity has been, when we were called back by another boat.  Our captains are in constant communications with everyone on the water and if an animal is around, the Western Prince Crew will know about it!

The T124A family seemed to be fresh off a kill when we caught up with them on the southern tip of Spieden Island. They seemed to be milling about the area, seemingly sharing a recently killed harbor porpoise.  They were slapping their flukes on the water and occasionally spyhopping as well. We stayed with them for about 30 minutes and got to enjoy some spectacular surface activity. This was a really unique spot to view the whales because the water so close to the shoreline gave it an eerie green glow.

Later that same day we were lucky enough to catch back up with them up north.  They seemed to be enjoying another meal. The late afternoon light provided us with some excellent photo opportunities as well as calm afternoon waters.  We were one of the few boats that were able to spend the late afternoon with this family. It was such a peaceful moment that our captain turned off the engine so everyone could enjoy just being able to hear the orcas exhalations clearly, only interrupted by the lapping of water off the bow.

As we enter the summer season, offering more trips throughout the day, I’m excited to be able to view these magnificent animals, and all the Salish Sea has to offer, with a new seascape every day.
