Bigg’s Killer whales and Pinniped Action on Memorial Day Weekend!

Bigg’s Killer whales and Pinniped Action on Memorial Day Weekend!

From the Western Explorer:
Celebrating Memorial Day weekend in style!!! As we left Friday Harbor, we were very lucky to already have a report of Bigg’s Killer whales in the area. After heading south, we stopped at Whale rocks to view Steller sea lions, little did we know what an exciting encounter it would be. A group of 8 were playing, socializing and porpoising (coming almost all the way out of the water). Check out the flippers in the air in the below image sequence. We then moved on to meet up with the T101s and T102, three males and a female. After getting some great looks at them and some fantastic passes, we made a bonus stop. On our way back to Friday Harbor, we picked up T77A, another very large male with a distinct dorsal fin, two nicks on the back of the dorsal. We also got to enjoy at least 50 Harbor Seals enjoying the sunshine at Whale rocks.
