Killer Whales in Canadian Waters

Killer Whales in Canadian Waters

May 23, 2024 – We left the dock with a rumor of possible whales in Rosario Strait. We headed in that direction but quickly learned it was a bad report. Our only other report that day was for Bigg’s killer whales way up in Canada. They were at the edge of range and moving farther away. We decided to go for it. None of our passengers had a deadline after the trip so off we went! By the time we caught up to the Whales we were nearing Crofton BC and the north end of Salt Spring Island! This is the farthest I had ever gone on a regular trip. It was beautiful scenery the entire way although a bit chilly and windy. We spent 40 minutes with the T101’s, a family of Bigg’s (marine mammal eating) Killer whales. The group was made up of mom who is estimated to have been born in 1969 and her 2 adult son’s aged 27 and 31! When we arrived they appeared to be finishing up an earlier kill. A Bald Eagle and several Gulls were swooping down to grab the leftovers. The eagle picked up a chunk of meat with its talons then transferred it to its beak so it could eat it on the fly and then hunt for more. Eventually we had to say goodbye to the whales and head for home. We made a brief stop at Green Point, on Spieden Island, to check out the Steller Sea Lions on the way home! What a day – 81 miles round trip!!!!
