Spring In The San Juan Islands

Spring In The San Juan Islands

We’ve been enjoying a classic spring in the Pacific Northwest here in the San Juan Islands. As we head into April, our daylight hours are stretching into the evening . We’re nestled in the rain shadow of the Olympic Peninsula so we don’t get the same amount of rain as our neighbors in Seattle and Olympia. We’ve been enjoying a sun filled spring and are excited for more beautiful afternoons right around the corner!

We’ve had whales on the vast majority of our trips so far. It’s nice to see some of our most familiar Bigg’s Killer Whale families return to see how they’ve grown. This is also a great time of year to spot some of the babies of spring. We can see baby mouflon sheep, fallow and sika deer grazing along Spieden Island. We’re eagerly awaiting the return of many of our humpback whales to see who has a baby in tow, as well.

We’re running daily whale watching tours from Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. We’re located just 90 miles north of Seattle. Take the ferry from Anacortes and enjoy the cruise through the islands. It’s the perfect getaway for a daytrip from the city or even an overnight stay.

Our whale sightings continue to be phenomenal. We’ve had excellent sightings of Bigg’s Killer Whales throughout the Salish Sea. This week we even had our first sighting of returning gray and humpback whales as they begin to return from their breeding grounds.

The weather in April and May is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to low-60s Fahrenheit. This makes it a great time to explore the outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands without the heat or crowds of the summer months.

Aside from getting on the water, San Juan Island itself is a beautiful place to explore. Spring is a great time for exploring the outdoors and hiking or biking to explore the islands’ natural beauty and get some exercise. Hiking off of the south end of the island allows for views of the Cascades and Olympic mountains, which are both still capped in snow.

We’re excited for what the months ahead have to offer in one of the most beautiful places in Washington!
