Springtime Whale Watching on San Juan Island

Springtime Whale Watching on San Juan Island

We’ve been enjoying a classic spring in the Pacific Northwest here in the San Juan Islands. As we head into May, our daylight hours are stretching into the evening and we’re excited for more sun-filled afternoons right around the corner!
We’re running daily whale watching tours from Friday Harbor, San Juan Island and our whale sightings continue to be phenomenal. We’ve had excellent sightings of Bigg’s Killer Whales throughout the Salish Sea, as well as humpback whales that are migrating back from their winter breeding grounds.

The weather in May is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to low-60s Fahrenheit. This makes it a great time to explore the outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands without the heat or crowds of the summer months.
May is an excellent time to spot wildlife in the San Juan Islands, as well. Joining one of our tours maximizes your chance of spotting four species of whales, seals, porpoise, sea lions, and a variety of seabirds.
Aside from getting on the water, San Juan Island itself is a beautiful place to explore. Springtime brings beautiful wildflowers to the islands, including purple camas, trillium, and fawn lilies. Take a hike or stroll through the hillside to enjoy the colorful display.
Spring is a great time for outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, or biking to explore the islands’ natural beauty and get some exercise. Hiking off of the south end of the island allows for views of the Cascades and Olympic mountains, which are both still capped in snow.

We’re excited for what the spring has to offer in one of the most beautiful places in Washington!
