Sunny day with Humpback whales!

Sunny day with Humpback whales!

What a wonderfully sunny day at sea!  We got a report of a humpback whale in Canadian waters and it was a perfect day to make the trip north.  Guests were able to enjoy the sun as we passed some of the area’s most fascinating rock formations, enjoying some harbor seal haul-outs as well as one passing BC Ferry.

We joined the humpback, who seemed to be foraging the area for small bait fish, about halfway into our trip.  This whale was nicknamed Zig Zag and he lived up to his name! After some of his longer dives, we never knew where he was going to pop back up.  Guests and naturalists alike had our necks on a swivel as we guessed where we thought he would surface next. We always got to hear him before we would see him.  His exhalations were massive, easily bursting 15-20 feet in the air, which was a great photo opportunity for all on board. We were lucky to see his massive flukes as he went on some of his deeper dives, as well.  After spending a good chunk of our trip with Zig Zag we peeled off in search of other wildlife and were not disappointed. As we headed home we got some great looks at some bald eagles as well harbor seals and some steller sea lions, too!
