The T65As catch dinner, then play!

The T65As catch dinner, then play!

We had a spectacular day on the water.  About ten minutes before we were set to leave the dock we got a call that one of our favorite transient killer whale families was well within our range.  We cruised east through the islands ending up in Lopez Sound, a picturesque place in its own right. However, when you add killer whales to the mix it becomes a dreamscape.  The T65As, which is comprised of mom and her five offspring, appeared to have just finished hunting what we believe to be a harbor seal and were displaying some excellent surface behavior.  They were breaching, tail lobbing, and slapping their pectoral fins on the surface. We thought they might be ready to digest and move on when the oldest male of the family started to circle a reef and potentially grabbed another snack to share with the family.  After a lot of thrashing and splashing, they started their surface show again to the delight of everyone on board. When they finally switched back into travel mode we peeled off to go look for other critters.

We cruised south around Lopez Island enjoying the ever-growing bull kelp forests until we came upon a pair of bald eagles nestled up in the trees.  As we moved on we got to enjoy a number steller sea lions growling for their prime haul out territory as well as a number of harbor seals, basking in the summer light.
