A tour to the north of the San Juan Islands has lots of wildlife and Killer whales too!

A tour to the north of the San Juan Islands has lots of wildlife and Killer whales too!

It was fun to experience so much of what the Salish Sea has to offer in one afternoon.  Our first stop was one of my favorite Wildlife Refuges, Skipjack island.  There we found Bald Eagles, lots of Harbor seals and some Pigeon Guillemots.  Not far away in Boundary Pass we were delighted to see a pod of Bigg’s marine mammal eating Killer Whales.  This family group was made up of 5 whales which included the mother T65A, born in 1986, and her 4 calves, the eldest, T65A2, a sprouting teenage male and other siblings born in 2007, 2011 & 2014. In the picture with the three dorsal fins evenly spaced you can see identifying characteristics of each Whale.  From left to right we have T65A2 with the taller fin and big nick near the top, T65A4 with the very curved fin with a nick in the middle and T65A with the distinctive bumps at the top of the trailing edge of her dorsal fin.    From where we watched the whales we had a distant view of the Patos Island Lighthouse.  On the way back to Friday Harbor Captain Peter parked the boat with a beautiful view of Waldron Island and treated us all to his geology talk.  One last stop at White Rock for loads of Harbor Seals and another Bald Eagle sitting at the very top!
