Whale Report: August 16, 2023 AM – T101s and Puffins

August 16, 2023 AM – It was a hot sunny day and we were all looking forward to being out on the water.  We headed south with our first couple stops in Cattle Pass.  First to see a very regal Bald Eagle and next on to see the Steller Sea Lions at Whale Rocks.  It was really fun as many were in the water and would come up in big groups around the boat.  Next we headed of shore to look for a Minke whale.  The one that had been spotted was being elusive so we decided to keep going and check out some Bigg’s (marine mammal eating) Killer Whales.  We traveled along the south end of Lopez Island until we encountered the T101’s.  This is a family group made up of mom, T101, a 54 year old female and her 2 sons, T101A is 30 years old and T101B is 26.  They were split in two groups, but eventually came together.  It was a gorgeous day and Mt. Baker was the back drop for much of our trip.  When it was time to say good by to the whales Captain JB took us to Smith Island to see Tufted Puffins!  There are very few left in the inland sea, but we were lucky enough to see about a dozen!  The are still in their breeding plumage and are very impressive.  From there we headed back to the dock after another great trip on the Western Explorer II!
