August 18, 2023 – Today’s trip was packed full of amazing encounters! We had barely left Friday Harbor when we got a report of a group of whales just a few miles away near Spieden Island! Off we went! When we got on scene, it turned out to be a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales known as the T37As. This mom and her three kids were right in the middle of whacking around a harbor seal! We got to watch their incredible displays of power as they hunted, tail lobbed and finally finished off their kill. Then it was celebration time! The whales moved off the reef and towards us when suddenly, T37A3 “Spinnaker” did a massive breach! Then he did two more! After that incredible encounter, we got a report that 18 more Bigg’s Killer Whales picked up just a mile away! We got some great looks as some of the whales in the area traveled through Spieden Channel. This group consisted of four different families, including the mother and younger sister of T37A “Volker” who we had just watched with her kids! Overall, an amazing day in the San Juan Islands with over 20 different whales!
