Whale Report: August 25, 2023 – T137s in Sansum Narrows

August 25, 2023 – What a trip! We ran over 30 miles to the north from Friday Harbor to see a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales in a gorgeous place known as the Sansum Narrows. It is a very narrow passage between Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island in Canada. The family of four killer whales known as the T137s were heading even further north, away from the San Juans but as we caught up to the group, fortunately, they flipped around and started to head back down south which resulted in us getting to have a beautiful encounter with them as they traveled through the narrows in extremely flat water. It was a photographer’s dream with the whales in glassy calm water, the shade of the trees creating beautiful green coloring and the blows of the whales hanging forever in the still air. We ran the extra mile for this whale encounter and it was so worth it!
