Whale Report: August 9, 2023 AM – Overcast T Party

August 9, 2023 AM – We left the dock and headed north.  We had a possible report of Bigg’s (Marine Mammal eating) Killer Whales and at the moment they were heading away from us.  We did make a quick stop to check out some Harbor Seals at White Rock. Captain JB figured out the best route to take and off we went.  We encountered them cruising along the west side of Tumbo Island.  They were quite playful with lots of tail slaps and splashing around.  This group of 8 whales was made up of the T2C’s which included, Tasu, the 34 year old mother, her son Rocky, who is now 21, a 12 year old daughter and her youngest born in late 2020.  We also had T37, a 44 year old female with a massive triangular fin and the T34’s.  T34 is estimated to be 54 years old and traveling with her two daughters aged 16 and 6!  During our encounter we had an unexpected rain shower.  It did not seem to bother the whales and it was kind of cool to see all the rain in the photos!  From there we decided to head for sunshine and another group of Bigg’s  We stopped to check out a beautiful Bald Eagle near Monarch Head then onto  the Pender Islands for a short visit with T36 and the T36 B’s, a group of 4 whales spanning 3 generations!
