Whale Watch Report: June 18, 2019 AM – Western Prince II

We had a beautiful morning on the water with perfect conditions. After leaving the dock on San Juan Island we received a report that a group of marine mammal eating Orcas had been spotted to the North.

We headed that way and soon encountered the Orca Whales (T65A’s) which consisted of a 33-year-old mother and her 5 offspring. The Killer Whales were spread in two groups in Boundary Pass. Shortly after we arrived we realized that T65A2, a 15-year-old male was in pursuit of a harbor porpoise. At one point a younger sister made a leap clear out of the water and back in head first. There were no obvious signs that they caught the porpoise but the two groups did come together and went on a long dive. When they came up they had changed from heading east to heading south which had them pass off of the back of our boat. T65A swam past with her ~14-month-old calf between her and her 15-year-old son.

Next, we headed to Java Rocks were we saw Harbor Seals and a Bald Eagle come for a landing on the rocks. We made our way back through John’s pass and the Cactus Islands seeing lots of cool stuff along the way back to Friday Harbor
