June 21, 2023 PM – We left the dock and headed east through the middle of the islands to Rosario Strait. From there we headed north towards were we knew of a report of Orcas. On the way we learned that a Humpback whale had been spotted so we stopped to check out. It was making very long dives and being evasive so we kept going. We encountered the T123’s, a family of Bigg’s (marine mammal eating) killer whales on the north end of Lummi Island. This family is made up of T123, the mother age 38, her 23 year old son, Stanley and daughters T123C – Lucky and 123D, Darcy aged 11 and 5 respectively. They were in a slow travel mode with lots of zigzagging. While watching the whales an Osprey flew over us with a Starry Flounder in its talons! Wow, what a sight. I estimated that the fish weighed close to what the Osprey weighed which is about 3 pounds! After hanging out with these beautiful Orcas we began to leave. Then Captain JB heard over the radio that the whales had just killed a Harbor Porpoise, needless to say, we turned back. They were feeding on their kill and were more active with a huge spy hop and little Darcy jumped out of the water. Captain JB then spotted something bright pink in the water and yelled LUNGS! This is one of the parts that the Bigg’s Killer whales often leave behind. After the whales moved on we went over to check them out before leaving! Wow! We made one last stop at Clement’s reef, near Sucia Island, to check out some Harbor Seals, then a beautiful cruise home along the Orcas Island Shoreline . This will be a trip to remember!
