Whale Report: June 3, 2023 – An Afternoon with the T124As

June 3, 2023 – Whales went under the deception pass bridge two days in a row! Unlike yesterday, this group went through earlier so on our trip, we caught up to them just as they were exiting the pass. This family of Bigg’s killer whales is known as the T124As and surprisingly, they also exited the pass in one try! There are two young calves in the group so it is doubly impressive! We had some of the best water conditions for viewing these animals as they traveled through the San Juan Islands. The water was silky smooth when they were surfacing and we even got some great looks at them surfacing under Mt. Baker and the Burrows Island lighthouse. It was beautiful to watch this family of Mom, her two adult daughters, her younger kids and her grandchild traveling all together. By the end of the day, this family had traveled over 60 miles from their original location in the morning! It is incredible to think about how far they can travel in just a few hours! There were a ton of harbor porpoises and little birds known as rhinoceros auklets out and about as well. Finally, we got to see some Steller Sea Lions on the rocks before heading back to Friday Harbor.
