Whale Report: June 30, 2023 – T65As and T77s

June 30, 2023 AM – Today we headed out from Friday Harbor towards the north. We ran all the way up into Canadian waters where we searched for wildlife along the shores of Saturna Island. We headed out to Boiling Reef where we stopped to watch the incredibly strong currents and then headed back to the San Juan Islands and checked out the Patos Island lighthouse with a fantastic view of Mt. Baker in the backdrop. We spotted a young steller sea lion hanging out on the boundary marker and then cruised back south to the Cactus Islands where tons of harbor seals were hanging out in the kelp! We finished off the trip with a beautiful encounter with a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales known as the T65As. This family of five were split with mom T65A “Artemis” and two of her kids traveling just a little ways away from the other half of her kids and another mom T77. It was fun to see T65A2 “Ooxja”, an almost fully grown male, surfacing next to his younger siblings!
