Whale Report: May 17, 2023 – Bigg’s Killer Whales in Georgia Strait

May 17, 2023 – We had a long run up to the north from the San Juan Islands today.  We crossed the US – Canadian border a couple of times as we headed up to Point Roberts.  The tall buildings in the back ground are part of the greater Vancouver, BC area.  Luckily for us the conditions were perfect for this kind of trip.  When we got there we encountered the the 124A2’s a family of 3 Bigg’s (marine mammal eating) Orcas.  They included the mother T124A2 – born in 2001 and her two calves, T124A2A a 10 year old male and his little sister, T124A2B who is now 7.   They were traveling along slowly doing a few zig and zags.  The interesting thing was they were surrounded by probably 50 – 100, spread out, Harbor Porpoise.  These animals are a part of their diet, but they did not seem to even notice them.  Just before we left their was one lunge a little milling, then they went on their way again.  On the way back to Friday Harbor we got to stop at the beautiful Patos Island Lighthouse.  We could see most of Mt. Baker and the Twin Sisters in the background.  Captain JB also spotted a Bald Eagle for us to checkout.
