May 7, 2023 AM – Today’s trip in the San Juan Islands was filled with exciting sightings! We started off by heading north to Spieden Island where we spotted a bunch of steller sea lions on the rocks! We also noticed a darker, smaller sea lion that turned out to be a California sea lion! That species in on the rarer side in this area so it was cool to get to see two of them hanging out together! We continued along the Spieden Island shoreline where we spotted several bald eagles and some mouflon sheep! At that point, we got a report of a humpback whale further north beyond the Canadian border so off we went! It turned out to be one of our favorites, BCZ0414 “Zephyr”. This whale has a gorgeous white tail with a very interesting design on it! We have seen her several times this season and she is always a delight! At one point, she surfaced quite close to us and rolled over, showing off her beautiful tail! We soon headed back to Friday Harbor, enjoying all the beautiful sights of the islands and the glassy water conditions
