Whale Report: September 5, 2023 – Summer Camp Kids

September 5, 2023 – It’s rare that we get whales right outside of Friday Harbor but that’s what happened today! When we first got on scene, we quickly figured out that it was a group of four Bigg’s Killer Whales but a very interesting mix. The group consisted of two pairs of siblings, T137A “Jack” and his little sister T137D “Wright”, and T37A3 “Spinnaker” and his little sister T37A4 “Crinkle”. What was even more interesting is that the two pairs were away from their mothers and other siblings and they were found just outside of Friday Harbor, the exact same place they were found the day before! The group started traveling through Griffin Bay and we got to watch as they took a seal and then headed out Cattle Pass. We’ve dubbed this group, the Summer Camp Kids, because it feels like these four young-adult and juvenile whales were sent off to summer camp by their mothers and they’re not really sure what to do or who is in charge!
