What is the best time of year to see whales in San Juan Islands?

Whales can actually be found around the San Juan Islands year round. However, peak season to see whales in the islands is typically May through September (best weather too), with April and October being very good months as well.

There are 4 types of whales we search for around the San Juan Islands. Killer Whales (Orcas) are not migratory and can be found almost any day of the year in our area. In particular, we focus on what are referred to as Bigg’s Killer Whales (Orcas), which are thriving as a population and only feed on marine mammals. The other three types we search for are migratory baleen whales; Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, and Gray Whales. Grays are usually found mostly in the Spring, whereas Humpbacks and Minkes are normally found throughout the summer, into fall.

Our long range boat, experienced crew, and our departure location in Friday Harbor help ensure that our sightings are the highest they can be. However, keep in mind that the whales in this area can travel up to 100 miles in a 24 hour period and that every year is different depending upon what is happening in the ecosystem. Of course, even the few tours that don’t include whales are worthwhile, with beautiful island scenery, Bald Eagles, Porpoises, Seals, Sea Lions, and lots of interesting Sea Birds.
