A wonderful tour in the San Juan Islands! Lots of whales and wildlife!

A wonderful tour in the San Juan Islands! Lots of whales and wildlife!

It was fun to experience so much of what the Salish Sea has to offer in one afternoon.  We headed south from Friday Harbor.  As we approached Whale Rocks we spotted about a dozen Steller Sea Lions both on the rocks and in the water.  Next, we headed out to Salmon Bank.  It was flat calm and the gulls were feeding on several bait balls.  We waited patiently hoping for a Minke Whale sighting and sure enough as the birds flew off one surfaced in the middle of the bait ball.  After several surfacings, we continued our journey around San Juan Island.  Soon we were delighted to see a pod of Bigg’s marine mammal eating Killer Whales.  This family group was made up of 5 whales which included T65A, female born in 1986, and her 4 calves, the eldest, T65A2, a sprouting teenage male with other siblings born in 2007, 2011 & 2014.     The whales were very active while bucking a big flood tide and stayed in about the same place for an hour.  We found 2 bald eagles sitting in a tree together on Henry Island, a bald eagle chick in the nest on Battle Ship Island and then back to Friday Harbor we went.
