Bigg’s Orcas in Active Pass

Bigg’s Orcas in Active Pass

July 3, 2025 – We left the dock and headed north. We had fingers crossed that the few whales that were at the edge of our range would not move any further north. We made a quick stop at Flat Top Island to check out some Harbor Seals. There were several hauled out on the rocks and some in the water too. We were super lucky to have some of the new seal pups there with their mums. Next we settled in for the long but gorgeous run north through the Gulf Islands of British Columbia. We got to go through Active Pass before entering the Strait of Georgia in search of whales. It was a little bit chunky out there but we quickly spotted a Humpback Blow in the distance. As Captain Bethany slowly zeroed in on the Humpback we got a couple of quick looks before it would dive again. After about 15 minutes we got a new report of Bigg’s Killer Whales just 20 minutes away so we headed back in the calm, beautiful waters of Active Pass. The T49A family made up of Nan (39 F) and 4 of her 6 offspring including Nat (14 M), Neptune (11 M), Nebula (8 F) and Smoosh Face (3 M)! They zigzagged a bit then started cruising along Mayne Island’s beautiful sandstone shoreline. After our beautiful encounters we headed for home.
