Harbor Seals and Killer Whales

Harbor Seals and Killer Whales

July 29, 2024 – It was a very typical late summer day with the morning starting out quite foggy and overcast. We headed out into Haro Strait where there was a shore report of a group of killer whales off the west side of San Juan Island. It turned out to be a family of five Bigg’s killer whales known as the T109A2s. This family has been cruising through the area for the last several weeks and we got some amazing looks as they traveled tightly together across the strait towards Darcy Island. After some time spent with the whales, we pulled away to check out some of the other critters found along the shoreline. There were several Harbor Seals hauled up on the rocks, including one mom and pup pair relaxing together! Adorable! We also spotted an adult Bald Eagle that was quickly joined by a juvenile, most likely its fledged chick from that year!
