Whale Report: June 5, 2023 – T49s and a Gray Whale!

June 5, 2023 – We started out of Friday Harbor with a report of some killer whales on the eastern side of the San Juan Islands. Off we went! It was a pretty blustery day out on the water but the sea spray and wind made this adventure extra fun! We caught up with a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales known as the T49As! This family has the entire range of sizes and ages! Mom T49A “Nan” had five out of her six kids traveling with her, including her oldest son T49A1 “Noah” who is a fully grown adult male, and her youngest, little T49A6 who is a two-year-old calf! We watched as they traveled together through Thatcher Pass. After that, we continued south to avoid the wind and spotted a Gray Whale! This whale was very much a surprise encounter since Gray Whale sightings are rare for this time of year! The whale was also fairly small so probably a yearling or juvenile from the previous year. We got some great looks at it with the Deception Pass Bridge in the background! What a fun two-species kind of day!
