Whale Report: July 24, 2023 – T46B1s and Zephyr the Humpback

July 24, 2023 AM – We headed south of Friday Harbor today. It was a rare, cloudy day in the San Juan Islands but we love the gray days because the glare can be less on the water and it’s fun to see the mist in the trees. We started off by checking out the Steller Sea Lions on a reef called whale rocks and then headed out into the strait of Juan De Fuca towards a report of some killer whales. The family that we caught up with were a group of four individuals, two adult females and two smaller whales. This group was the T46B1s, which consists of a mom T46B1 “Tread” and her two kids. Her adult female cousin T46C2 “Sam” was also traveling with them. They were very zig-zaggy but we got some fantastic looks as they surfaced together. After some time spent with them, we headed off and after a few minutes of searching, Captain Ivan spotted a humpback! We were able to identify the whale as BCZ0414 “Zephyr” when she lifted her tail! It’s not every day that we get two species of whales in one trip!
