Whale Report: September 4, 2023 – T75Bs and T77D

September 4, 2023 – The conditions in the San Juan Islands were beautiful on this day. We headed west, towards a report of a group of whales outside of Victoria. The group of whales we encountered are known as the T75Bs. This family of 6 have been seen many times in our area for the past month or so. There are several adult females and a couple of younger whales. They also have a very young calf, that is only a few weeks old! We watched as they all surfaced together in some glassy water and even got to see them go past the Discovery Island lighthouse. There is a beautiful mural on the side of the lighthouse that depicts a wolf known as Takaya who used to live on Discovery Island. On the way back to Friday Harbor, we also got to check out some Steller Sea Lions and lots of bait balls.

Update: Unfortunately, since this encounter, the newest calf that was less than a month old has died.
