Whale Report: June 11, 2023 – We Ott Here

June 11, 2023 AM – We headed out of Friday Harbor with no reports of whales which is typical for us! We decided to head south down San Juan Channel and as we were just getting to Cattle Pass, suddenly, Captain Ivan spotted a blow! It was a gray whale! We had some really great looks at this gray whale known as CRC-2506 as they traveled through Cattle Pass. Suddenly, as we were watching the gray whale, a sea otter popped up right next to us! Sea Otters are extremely rare in the San Juan Islands! It was holding a huge red sea urchin and started cracking it open as we watched! Sea Otters are crucial for the management urchins that eat and destroy critical kelp forest habitat! At one point, we had the sea otter next to us with the gray whale in the distance and we watched the gray whale breach! What an incredible double rare animal encounter!
