Whale Report: August 4, 2023 – T137s and Yogi the Humpback

August 4, 2023 AM – We headed out of Friday Harbor towards the northern part of the San Juan Islands towards a report of some Bigg’s Killer Whales. We spotted two whales traveling along the Waldron Island shoreline. It turned out to be two siblings, T137A “Jack” and his younger sister T137D “Wright”. The water conditions were gorgeous and we had some beautiful looks at the whales as they surfaced in the glassy water. We got a report of a humpback whale only a small distance away so we started to head off but as soon as we turned away, both the killer whales suddenly breached! We watched as both “Jack” and “Wright” breached multiple times and then spent some time tail lobbing. “Wright” even did some upside-down pectoral slaps and tail lobs! We watched them play for a bit before finally turning away again. Up north, we got some looks at the humpback whale known as BCY0409 “Yogi”. We got some looks at their flukes before the T137s started aiming straight towards us and the humpback whale. We got one last look at the killer whales and “Yogi” before heading home.
