Killer Whales in the San Juan Islands

Killer Whales in the San Juan Islands

May 10, 2024 – Today’s trip took us south out of Friday Harbor towards the open waters of the Straits of Juan De Fuca. We spent some time searching before we got a report of some Bigg’s Killer Whales to the northeast of us in Rosario Strait. It was a group of six whales, all juveniles, and adult females with very clean dorsal fins. A bit challenging to ID but we were able to figure it out eventually. The group was an interesting mixture of three adult females and some kids. The T124Ds, T124A1, and T86A1s. T124A1 “Bonapartes” is a very interesting whale in that she is a lone female that moves from group to group. She is 27yrs old now and has never had a calf! She seems to be the cool aunt of many groups. She likes to pop in and out to spend time with her sisters and cousins before moving on.
