A Beautiful afternoon with “Heather” and “Divot” the Humpback Whales!

The enthusiasm expressed when we caught sight of the 2 humpback whales, known as BCX01057 “Divot” and BCY0160 “Heather”,  made the long run worth it.  It was really fun to see these huge whales surface in the waters that were colored by the silt in the outflow of the mighty Fraser River.  Heather was the whale that did the final fluke up dive (you can see the sideways capital H in the upper left side of her fluke).   It was Divot that did the surprise cartwheel.  I thought it was Heather, but you can see the U-shaped chunk missing from the fluke, in the splash landing.  We saw lots of beautiful scenery on our long journey and were within view of downtown Vancouver, BC when we reached the whales.  The last picture is of East Point on Saturna Island, with the Coast Mountains (Canada’s portion of the Cascades) in the background.
