Whale Report: July 12, 2023 AM – Babyfest

July 12, 2023 AM – We headed north with the hope of catching up with The T65B’s.  They were at the edge of our range we hoped that they would not go any further to the north.  Lucky for us they had actually come a little closer by the time we got there.  Captain Ivan took the shortest and most beautiful route through Georgenson Pass in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.  We were really excited to get a look at T65’Bs youngest calf that was born earlier this year.  The calf was traveling in a tight group with its 30 year old mother, 12 year old brother and 4 year old sibling.  We first had them with the city of Vancouver and the Canadian Costal Range as the back drop, but then they moved closer to the Galiano Island shoreline.  After a great encounter we took off to see what else we could find.  We headed through Active Pass and then down Swanson Channel.  As we were getting close to where a Humpback had been spotted another boat reported that another group of Orcas had just been found and the Humpback had disappeared.  We only had about 10 minutes to stop, but in that time the T49A’s started circling, possibly hunting.  Whatever it was it must have gotten away.  After a huge spy hop by 13 year old T49A3 (identified by his eye patch) the whales grouped up and moved on.  It was fun to see little “Smoosh Face” (my name for T49A6) with its cute under bite traveling with mom and big brother, 22 year old Noah!  Beautiful scenery, beautiful whale encounters and lots of great questions made this a really fun trip!
