Humpback whales and more in the San Juan Islands!

Humpback whales and more in the San Juan Islands!

When we left the dock on May 8th we did not know what the day would bring. We headed north making stops at Flat Top Island, White Rock and Skip Jack to check out the Harbor Seals, Pigeon Guillemots, and Bald Eagles. From there we ventured into Canadian waters to check out Boiling Reef at East Point on Saturna Island. There we saw Tons of Steller Sea Lions hauling out on the rocks, one California Sea Lion, and 7 Bald Eagles in various stages of maturity and plumage. Then a report of a Humpback whale came in and off we went to Monarch Head to get a glimpse of “Slate.” Slate zigzagged back and forth and towards the end of our encounter surfaced near the boat in beautifully calm waters and good light. It was spectacular! It was time to head back to Friday Harbor. Captain Peter took a slight detour through the beautiful Cactus Islands where we saw more Harbor Seals, Quaking Aspen trees (on Ripple Island) and a couple of Harlequin Ducks. Mt. Baker was our beautiful scenic backdrop for most of the day.
