Humpback in Canadian Waters

Humpback in Canadian Waters

July 25, 2024 PM – Today we cruised north to our first stop at White Rock. We were excited to see loads of Harbor Seals hauled out on the shoreline of this beautiful National Wildlife Refuge! Although we knew that there was a Humpback up in Canada, we still looked for other whales along the way. Our route took us up into Navy Channel between South Pender Island and Saturna and through beautiful Georgenson Pass and then out into the Strait of Georgia. There we encountered “Gibbous!” Gibbous is a male humpback that was first seen in 2010 and comes from Hawaii. His name comes from the big gash in his tail fluke, that most likely came from and entanglement, that looks like a Gibbous moon. Gibbous seemed to be in slow mode this afternoon. Lucky for us he was taking very short dives and stayed on a fairly steady course. Although with short shallow dives he did not need to lift his beautiful fluke up during our encounter, so I snuck a couple of picture from the morning trip into this report. It was still a beautiful encounter with a BC Ferry and the city of Vancouver and its suburbs as our distant backdrop. We had time for one quick stop for a Bald Eagle on the way home!
