Whale Report: May 20, 2023 – The Alaska Boys

May 20, 2023 -Today we headed out from Friday Harbor on a very adventurous trip! It was fairly windy but we had a report of some Bigg’s Killer Whales to the south of Lopez Island so off we went. We stopped at Whale Rocks and spotted several juvenile bald eagles plus an adult sitting on top of the reef. There were also several steller sea lions hanging out and we got a great view of them with the Cattle Pass Lighthouse in the backdrop. We continued on and made our way further south through some big swell and wind but managed to locate a male killer whale! This individual is known as T125 “Flotsam” who normally travels with his brother T125A “Jetsam”. The two males are well-known as the Alaska Brothers and were traveling separated by about a mile. We noticed very quickly that “Flotsam” had huge rake marks on both sides of his dorsal fin. Those could have come from another killer whale like his brother or maybe from a prey animal like a steller sea lion! Overall, a very cool day in the San Juan Islands with an iconic male in the population.
