Whale Report: September 10, 2023 – Minke Whale, T46s+T46Bs

September 10, 2023 – We had a gorgeous day in Rosario Strait, filled with all sorts of special encounters! We left Friday Harbor with a report of two separate types of whales to the east of the San Juan islands. We started with a gorgeous look at a minke whale as it traveled along the shoreline of Blakely Island. This is a very unusual place for a minke whale to be but it was beautiful to see it traveling through the green water in the shade of the tall trees. Only a mile away, we got to spend time with a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales. This group was made up of a bunch of siblings and younger whales. The T46s, a sister and her younger brothers, were traveling with the T46Bs, another of their siblings and her kids. There is a young calf in the group that was popping up quite high out of the water. The largest dorsal in the family belongs to T46E “Thor” and wow is he impressive! We continued on to Bird Rock where we spotted a rare sea otter sighting, as well as some harbor seals and a steller sea lion!
