Friday Harbor Hiking and Shopping

Getting to Friday Harbor is a beautiful journey in itself, whether you’re flying or taking the ferry. Once you’ve arrived, we want to make sure your time on the island is time well spent.

Our parks offer an array of wildlife and educational installations. Check out the San Juan Island National Historical Park site to see what wildlife will be in abundance during your trip.

There are many hiking trails on San Juan Island, including the American Camp Trail and the English Camp Trail, which offer views of the island’s natural beauty and surrounding waterways. Lime Kiln Point State Park is a great place to spot whales and other marine life from the shore. It’s also a popular spot for picnicking and hiking. There are naturalists at the park to educate visitors about the surrounding area, particularly around Southern Resident Killer Whales.

Jakle’s Lagoon is a beautiful area with views of the lagoon, forests, and wetlands. It’s a great spot for birdwatching, and visitors may spot eagles, herons, and other wildlife. When parking at the Lagoon there are options for longer walks up toward Mt. Finlayson, which, on a clear day, offers views of the Olympic Mountains. While exploring the south side of the island, make sure to stop at American Camp for beach access, and a lovely place to enjoy the company of friends around a fire pit.

While driving around the island there are many options to pull over and explore at your leisure. These are some of our favorite recommendations for visitors looking for memorable experiences.

Pelindaba Lavender Farm is set on 25 acres of land and features stunning fields of lavender, as well as other flowers and plants. Visitors can stroll through the fields, take in the fragrant smells, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm is home to a herd of friendly alpacas that visitors can interact with and learn about. The farm also offers tours and workshops on alpaca care and fiber arts.

Amaro Farm is a beautiful and popular destination to visit on San Juan Island. It is known for its picturesque landscapes, organic farming practices, and charming farm stand.

San Juan Island Vineyards is a lovely place to go wine tasting. The vineyard is set in a picturesque location and offers a variety of wines to taste, including reds, whites, and dessert wines. They are known for producing some unique blends that are exclusive to the vineyard.

While exploring town there are a variety of shops to pop into to buy souvenirs and keepsakes. Some of our favorite are Deer Hazel and Sand Pebble for keepsakes unique to the Pacific Northwest. If you want to add a more personal touch to your clothes, stop by the Print Shop Northwest and browse artist created prints on merchandise of your choosing.

Give yourself some extra time next time to enjoy to natural beauty of the islands and browse the unique offerings of our small town!
