We had a glassy calm encounter with the T49A’s and T123 family groups of transient (Bigg’s) Killer whales. The orcas were tightly grouped and traveling slow as they moved along the south side of Saturna Island. They almost seemed to be in a resting pattern as they casually wandered along. As the orcas approached an area called Java Rocks, we thought they might become more active as this site happens to be a prevalent seal haul out. They changed directions a bit while they were around the rocks, but didn’t appear to catch anything for lunch. Perhaps they just weren’t hungry. We left the whales as they moved toward East Point and the encounter was wonderfully relaxed and full of family photo opportunities.
