Whale Report: June 17, 2023 – Stormy T Party and Humpbacks

June 17, 2023 AM – We had an action-packed trip out in the San Juan Islands today! We started off the trip with an interesting encounter with a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales! There were a total of 15 individuals from three different families. The families are known as the T65As, the T99s, and the T36s. They were traveling right in front of the Anacortes ferry terminal into Rosario Strait! Today was very windy so we were watching them through some fairly rough seas but it was all part of the fun adventure of the day! We even got to see some socializing behaviors from a few of the younger whales! In particular, five-year-old T65A6 “Callisto” and two-year-old T99E were doing toddler breaches and spyhops while traveling next to their mothers! Eventually, we headed back through the islands and before heading back to Friday Harbor, spotted two humpbacks! One was an adult that we identified as BCX2054 and a yearling that was born to BCX0158 “Kappa” last year. As we were getting on scene with them, the larger animal started pectoral slapping! We also got some great looks at both of their flukes.
