Whale Report: May 6, 2023 AM – Bigg’s Killer Whale T63 “Chainsaw” Sighting!

May 6, 2023 AM – We departed from Friday Harbor and fortunately already had a report of a large group of Bigg’s Killer Whales to the south of the San Juan Islands. We headed out towards the Strait of Juan de Fuca and as we were on our way to the group of killer whales, we spotted a large blow! It was a humpback whale! We stopped and had a couple of looks at the whale that we ID’d as BCZ0410 “Anvil”, a female humpback that we’ve spotted many times in previous years! We continued on to check out the killer whales and they were identified as Grandma T65 “Whidbey”, her two adult daughters T65A “Artemis” and T65B “Chunk, their kids, another family known as the T23s, and a very famous whale T63 “Chainsaw”. It was very exciting to see all the T65 matriline traveling together because usually the two daughters travel separately from T65 and T63, their mother and older brother. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the whole family together! They must have been happy to have the reunion because we had several fun tail lobs from various members, and even had a few breaches! T63 “Chainsaw” was also a delight to see with his very unique dorsal fin! What a wonderful trip!
