Whale Report: June 29, 2023 – T99s in Hale Passage

June 29, 2023 – We had an epic day aboard the Western Explorer II. We spotted a bald eagle and a harbor seal just outside the harbor. We then headed east with an early morning report of a group of killer whales traveling north in Hale Passage. This is not a frequent spot for us so we were excited to see what this group was up to. We watched from a distance as the T99 matriline meandered up Lummi Island. This family consists of T99 and her four kiddos. They were traveling together when they quickly began hunting and took their time taking down at least two harbor seals. We watched as they tore up their prey just under the surface and saw some of the remnants floating on the water. As soon as we were sure they’d made their kills a large group of gulls descended upon the water as the clean up crew. An exciting day for everyone on board!
