Whale Report: June 21, 2023 AM – Split Fin, Divot and the T123s

June 21, 2023 AM – We headed south on a nice but overcast day.  We actually like days like this as the water reflects the clouds and it makes spotting animals easier!  Our first stop was at Whale Rocks to see the Steller Sea Lions.  From there we headed east along the Lopez shoreline after passing Colville Island we encountered two humpback whales.  We were downwind of their first surfacing and we got a good whiff of what they had been eating, whoa that was a bit unpleasant. We realized we had two well known humpbacks with Divot and Split Fin.  They are actually siblings with their mother being Big Mama!  While they were on a longer dive a Steller Sea Lion surfaced with a fish in its mouth!  We watched it and some gulls chow down on what looked to be a north pacific spiny dog fish.  While were were watching the humpbacks we got word of Orcas not too far away so off we went.  We encountered the T123’s, a family of Bigg’s (marine mammal eating) killer whales on the north east side of Guemes Island.  This family is made up of T123, the mother age 38, her 23 year old son, Stanley and daughters T123C – Lucky and 123D, Darcy aged 11 and 5 respectively.  They were in travel mode although seemed to try to do a little hunting near a beach on Vendovi Island.  All in all it was a beautiful day with fantastic sightings!
