Whale Report: May 28, 2023 – T123s!

May 28, 2023 PM – What a day! We started out from Friday Harbor of a report of a group of Killer Whales to the north. It turned out to be a favorite family of ours, the T123s! This family of four consists of mom T123 “Sydney” and her three kids, T123A “Stanley”, T123C “Lucky” and T123D “Darcy”. When we got on scene, the family was acting sporadically, zigging and zagging every which way, doing longer dives. Suddenly, they stalled out and we saw a very quick flash of some hunting. They were milling and prey-sharing when “Sydney” did a beautiful spyhop! Her eyes were wide open and then we got to see “Stanley” do two more! He’s a fully grown male and when he spyhopped, you could see how massive his pectoral fins were! “Sydney” did one more spyhop making that four in a row! This kind of behavior is so rare and to have four in one encounter was extra special! The family quickly moved on, giving us a few last looks as they surfaced with Pt. Disney on Waldron Island in the backdrop. Before we headed back to the dock, we stopped to check out some harbor seals on the rocks and some sleepy and silly steller sea lions! We even spotted a huge gaggle of Canada Geese with their fluffy chicks! Another gorgeous day cruising through the San Juan Islands!
