Whale Report: August 9, 2023 PM – Orcas at Patos Light

August 9, 2023 PM – This afternoon we had a great encounter with a family of Bigg’s (Marine Mammal eating) Killer Whales.  We caught up with them in the waters between Waldron and Patos Islands.  This family group is made up of T37B, a 25 year old female and two of her calves, T37B1, an 11 year old male and her youngest who was born in some time in the last 7-9 months.  It was fun to watch the little one pop out of the waves right next to her mother.  Captain JB lined us up for a beautiful opportunity to see the whales with the Patos Island Lighthouse in the background.  As they passed the point they started zigzagging and surprised us with a close pass.  It was time to say goodby to the whales and go see what else we could find.  We headed to the Cactus Islands and saw Bald Eagles and Harbor Seals.  We finished the trip with a cruise along the south side of Spieden Island. I have to say the Mouflon Rams looked very impressive as they grazed along the hillside.
