Beautiful Humpback Flukes

Beautiful Humpback Flukes

August 1, 2024 PM – When we left the dock we had a report of a Humpback Whale way to the north up in Canada. We let everyone know and they were game for a long run. Lucky for us the short cut is the scenic route. We headed up into the Gulf Islands of British Columbia. First passing between South Pender and Saturna Islands, then going through the beautiful Jorgensen pass before heading out into the Strait of Georgia! We encountered one of two humpbacks in the area north of the BC ferry route. There were some rolling swells, but we still got lots of great looks at the whale. It did a couple of fluke up dives just after we arrived then got into travel mode. This was a “Z” humpback, meaning it had a lot of white on the underside of its fluke. Luckily the few pictures I took turned out well and with the help of naturalist Bethany Shimasaki, we identified it as BCZ0503 – “Harpy.” Harpy is Raptor’s calf from 2020! Eventually it was time to go as we had an even longer run back! Captain JB timed it perfectly and we got back to Friday Harbor in excellent time!
