Whale Watch Report: June 20, 2019 – Western Explorer II Around San Juan island

We had an exciting day out of Friday Harbor on the Western Explorer II. Not only did we see Bald Eagles, Harbor Seals, Steller Sea Lions and Harlequin Ducks, but three different groups of whales. We found a Minke whale by Salmon Bank. Its travel pattern was erratic and after one long dive it came up near our boat. My lens was all the way out to a 900 mm equivalent zoom and I got a close up of it dorsal fin and a couple of the parasites known as “Pennella” attached to its skin! Yikes! Next, we encountered 2 groups of Orca Whales, the T124A’s and T86A1, off the West side of San Juan Island, then the T65A’s near Sidney Island. What a great day to stow away!
