Whale Report: September 2, 2023 – Stitch Kelping

Whale Report: September 2, 2023 – Stitch Kelping

September 2, 2023 – What a special encounter we had today! We headed out of Friday Harbor with a report of several humpback whales to the west of the San Juan Islands. We headed west into Canadian waters and ended up almost 27 miles away from our dock! It was well worth the run because we got to see three different humpback whales, including BCX0519 “Stitch” playing with a bunch of kelp! These animals are extremely tactile and sometimes, they will use floating kelp to rub and drape over their bodies. “Stich” was using their face to push up the bundle and rolling around, lifting their pectoral fins up out of the water, and even doing some spyhops! We rarely get to see this kind of behavior so it was so special to watch “Stich” kelping!
