Western Prince II: July 5, 2016

Our day started off with a little drizzle and overcast skies with a report of orcas a bit far up to the north. Our odds looked pretty good when we left the dock, but a lot of times we just never know how things are going to work out for the day. Sometimes orcas can be sneaky and slip away or  they can change direction and travel high speed out of our range. It’s never a guarantee until we get eyes on the wildlife. Today though, worked out so amazingly well! There were two groups of whales, one in range, one getting out of range. By the time we got into the area, turns out the groups had all come together for quite the epic encounter. We had multiple matrilines of Bigg’s Killer whales (transient) having quite the parTy!! There was so much socializing going on it was tough to see what was all happening. Spyhops, breaching, tail lobs, porpoising, and lots of rolling around on each other. A truly special day in the Salish Sea!
