Killer Whales off Vancouver

Killer Whales off Vancouver

July 17, 2025 – We had a beautiful sunny day with not much wind to go exploring. Our first stop was at White Rocks which is one of 84 of the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuges in Washington State. It was covered with Harbor Seals hauled out in the sun. We also got a quick glimpse of a River Otter just before it went out of sight. There were some gulls there and Oyster Catchers too. Next we headed east to see Orcas. We started our encounter near the north end of Lummi Island. We had a family group of 4 Bigg’s Killer Whales known as the T36A’s. This sighting included Leland the 35 year old mother and 3 of her 4 offspring: T36A2, Kailas a 13 year old female, T36A3, Mike III a 10 year old male and her youngest T36A5, Auk, he is just 4 years old. They split into 2 groups of 2 and both seemed to be searching for food. It was fun to see mom hanging out with her youngest, and the two older siblings together. Kailas is the one with the nick in the tip of her dorsal fin. We finally had to leave as they headed north towards Canada. In my last picture you can see the faint outline of sky scrapper from the suburbs of Vancouver B.C.!
