Fluking Humpback Whale

Fluking Humpback Whale

July 25, 2024 AM – Today we cruised north with a pair of Bald Eagles flying over on our way to our first stop at Spieden Island.  We were excited to see a couple of Harbor Seal moms with their new young pups hauled out on the shoreline!  As we continued along the island we saw some exotic Mouflon (big-horned) sheep and several Bald Eagles.  From there we headed into Haro Strait and headed toward Turn Point on Stuart Island.  We checked out Lover’s Leap and the beautiful Turn Point Lighthouse.  From there we continued our search for whales up into Canada.  Captain JB had been working with other boats on a search strategy to increase our chances.  We decided to head up into Navy Channel between South Pender Island and Saturna.  As we searched the channel we got a report from a boat nearby that they had found a Humpback in the Strait of Georgia (SOG)!  We headed through beautiful Georgenson Pass and then out into the SOG where we encounter “Gibbous!”  Gibbous is a male humpback that was first seen in 2010 and comes from Hawaii.  His name comes from the big gash in his tail fluke, that most likely came from and entanglement, that looks like a Gibbous moon.  Gibbous did some beautiful fluke up dives during our encounter!
